A public viewing of former Cleveland High School and Seattle University basketball star Carl Ervin will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Bonney-Watson Funeral Home on Capitol Hill, 1732 Broadway.

A memorial service will be held at Mount Zion Baptist Church, 1634 19th Ave., Seattle, at 11 a.m. on July 9.

I never got the chance to get to know Ervin as well as I would have liked. But, from the day I first met him, he always came up with something positive to say.

He answered the phone every time I called. No matter what I needed, he found a way to help.

His passion for the game was evident in the way he carried himself as an assistant coach at O’Dea. He had a smile on his face every time I saw him and he often slapped me on the shoulder or shook my hand when he walked by after games on the way into the locker room.
