Piano students in the Rose, Jules R. and Stanford S. Setnor School of Music in Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) will celebrate the 200th birthdays of composers Frédéric Chopin and Robert Schumann with a concert on Wednesday, Oct. 27, at 8 p.m. in the Rose and Jules R. Setnor Auditorium, Crouse College. The concert is free and open to the public. Free parking is available in the Irving Garage.

The program includes Chopin’s Mazurka in F-sharp Minor, Op. 6, No. 1; Mazurka in B-flat Major, Op. 17, No. 1; Etude in F Minor, Op. 25, No. 2; Scherzo No. 3 in C-sharp Minor, Op. 39; and Ballade No. 4 in F Minor, Op. 52. It will also feature Schumann’s “Birthday March,” Op. 85, No. 1, for piano four-hands; Papillons Op. 2; and Faschingschwank aus Wien Op. 26, as well as Johannes Brahms’ Variations on a Theme of Robert Schumann Op. 9.

Chopin, who was born in March 1810 in Poland, and Schumann, who was born in June 1810 in Germany, are two composers largely considered indispensable by pianists. Their waltzes, polonaises, etudes, sonatas, concerti and character pieces endlessly fascinate and beguile.
