Syracuse Universitys Department of Health Services has appointed a new medical director, Spiro Tzetzis 91. Tzetzis has been working on campus in a part-time capacity since May 2, and will be on staff full time beginning June 1.
We are so very excited to have Dr. Tzetzis on board, says Rebecca Dayton, associate vice president for health and wellness in the Division of Student Affairs. He brings a wealth of clinical expertise, connections to the greater Syracuse health community and a wonderfully caring approach to student health.
Tzetzis is a family medicine physician who has spent the past 13 years working in private practice at Family Medicine Associates of CNY.
Since 2000, he has served as the school physician for the Central Square school district, and in 2010, he additionally became the physician for the Cicero-North Syracuse school district. Tzetzis has also been a guest lecturer for the Le Moyne College physician assistant program.
As an alum, I am honored to return and provide care, and promote health, to the students of Syracuse University, says Tzetzis. I take seriously the position I have been entrusted with by the University, and am looking forward to my role as medical director. Walking through the Quad brings back many fond memories; its good to be back!
An active professional within the medical community, Tzetzis is a member of the America Academy of Family Practice, the Medical Society of the State of New York, Onondaga County Medical Society and the medical staff of St. Josephs Hospital.
Tzetzis is highly involved with his Greek culture. He has been a council member of St. Sophias parish since 1999, where he served a two-year term as president, along with terms as chair of the annual dinner gala and Greek dance committees. He is currently on the stewardship and festival committees at the parish.
In 2005, Tzetzis received the American Hellenic Progressive Associations Community Service Award for his active role in the local Greek community.
As an undergraduate student at Syracuse University, Tzetzis participated in the upper-division honors program and was awarded a fellowship in biology. Upon graduation in 1991, he enrolled in Chicago Medical School and earned his doctorate of medicine in 1995. Tzetzis completed his residency in family medicine in 1998 at St. Josephs Hospital, when he then became a board-certified physician of the American Board of Family Medicine.
